Remember that song, “Sixteen tons of greasy, grimy gopher guts, mutilated monkey meat, concentrated birdy feet….”?
The meal that was meant to delight the less civil side of children and make parents and teachers alike moan and roll their eyes, would be my dog’s dream feast. The stinkier, the smellier, the grossier, the better.
My dog likes to chase and catch, rabbits, birds, and rats. (Which admittedly is pretty helpful around here). So for “Bomber the Birthday Dog” we make the ultimate smelly organic dog food treat. Homemade chicken liver treats. The minute my dog sees me grab the chicken liver container from the fridge, (I SWEAR he can READ), he sits at my feet waiting patiently for those delicious smelly morsels of organ meat wonderfulness. (Cue “Anticipation” by Carly Simon).
Fortunately for me, they make up pretty quick, and the recipe is flexible enough to add anything else in my fridge that is dog friendly and needs to be eaten. We discovered that these liver treats make great hiding places for his Shaklee vitamins (yes, they are made for humans but we give them to Bomber anyway they keep his coat looking awesome), and the occasional medicine from the vet.
Hope your dog enjoys them as much as our does. Fair warning, once you make them, you are committed to keeping them on hand. I’m serious. Your dog will never quit asking for them.
Bomber’s Favorite Liver Treats
Preheat the oven to 350
Tell your dog to go lay down. These will be ready soon.
In a blender or food processor add:
- 1 pound organic chicken liver (or beef, or goat if you can get it)*
- 3-4 organic carrots cooked until soft
- 1/2 cup organic peas (if your dog will eat them)
- 1/2-3/4 cup organic oats (you may want to soften them with water)
- 2 organic eggs
- Maybe some grated cheese if you really love your dog
Throw it all in a blender or food processor and blend or puree until fairly smooth.
Pour into an oiled 9 x 13 pan and bake until done about 18 minutes.
Cut into small bites. Allow to cool
By this time your dog will be driving you crazy, and you will need to quickly cool a few pieces for him right away.
To store, freeze the cut pieces in the pan. Once frozen, store the individual pieces in the freezer bag. Thaw as needed.
They will keep for about 3-5 days in the fridge.
*Nota bene – it’s important to use organic livers, since the livers of conventionally raised (AKA industrial) chicken and cattle are more likely to be toxic.
